Named after John Chavis (1763-1838); an early 19th century free Negro preacher and teacher of both races. The 37-acre park, was opened as a recreational spot for Raleigh’s black community during segregation.

Community Center, Sat., 9am-3pm (Sept.-May); Sun., 1-6pm (Nov.-Feb.);
Carousel, weekends 1-6pm (June-Aug.) Monday thru Friday 10am-10pm; Saturday 9am-3pm; Sunday 1-6pm
